20 May 2018: First World Bee Day

On 20 December 2017, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 20 May as the World Bee Day. 20 May was chosen in honour of Anton Janša.

Born on 20 May 1734, Anton (1734–1773) was the pioneer of modern beekeeping and the first teacher of modern beekeeping in the world. Empress Maria Theresa of Austria appointed Anton as a permanent teacher at the beekeeping school in Vienna.

The first World Bee Day presents an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of bees and beekeeping to food security.

Bees are the most important pollinators. They contribute to the successful production of pollination dependent crops including apples, apricots, blackberries, blueberries, coffee, cucumbers, onions, pears and peppers (chilli & bell).

Flora IP wishes everyone a humming and buzzing World Bee Day 🙂
