On 9 July 2018, Dr. Cristiana Paşca Palmer, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and Dr. Kent Nnadozie, Secretary of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to enhance cooperation between their Secretariats.
The MoC aims to build collaborative activities between the two organisations in the area of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.
The MoC includes:
(I) The development of synergies between the ITPGRFA’s Global Information System and the CBD’s Access and Benefit-sharing Clearing-House.
(II) A joint initiative for on-farm conservation.
(III) Work on sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture and protected areas.
(IV) Promotion of the importance of biodiversity and plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, for food security and nutrition under a changing climate.
As part of the MoC, the two secretariats will work together to organise workshops, seminars and other events, as well as coordinate technical assistance at the international, regional, sub-regional and national levels.
