First Protected Geographical Indication from Benin: Ananas Pain de Sucre du Plateau d’Allada (Sugarloaf Pineapple)

Geographical Indications in Africa Flora IP

Benin registered ananas pain de sucre du Plateau d’Allada (sugarloaf pineapple from the Allada Plateau) at the African Intellectual Property Organisation (OAPI) as its first Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). The official presentation of the registration certificate to the PGI Defense and Management Group occurred on 28 October 2021 in Cotonou, Benin.

This registration was a result of several years of concerted effort from the government of Benin and the pineapple sector stakeholders. The Benin stakeholders received technical and financial support from the European Union (EU) and the French Development Agency (AFD) through the Private Sector Stakeholder Support Project (PARASEP), as well as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
